Saint LuciaLuxury Saint Lucia Hotel Holidays

St Lucia is a luxury, lush, mountainous island. Saint Lucia boasts truly impressive tropical mountain scenery, not least the famous towering Pitons, as well as some delightful beaches and coral reefs (especially around Soufriere). The rich volcanic soil makes it particularly fertile with 18,000 acres of central rainforest and lush banana and coconut plantations. The French influence, dating back to the 18th century, can still be felt in the French place names and patois language spoken by many islanders.

Did you know....?
Saint Lucia boasts two Nobel Prize winners – Sir Arthur Lewis for Economics and Derek Walcott for Literature. Did you also know that one of the local fruits is called Love Apple – a small crunchy fruit, pink on the outside with a white papery inside?

Food & Drink
The national dish is Green Fig and Salt Fish – look out too for callalloo soup, local
banana bread, mango ice cream and mango pickle. Fruits are superb, especially
pineapple, soursop, tamarind, mangoes and bananas. There are some delicious local
rums and fruit drinks.

Restaurants
The Coal Pot in Vigie Cove is excellent for cuisine and location – local crab back is
delicious. On the Cap Estate is The Great House restaurant with superb cuisine in an elegant setting. South of Soufrière, Dasheene at Ladera should not be missed and the stylish Tao at The BodyHoliday at LeSPORT is also recommended.

Suggested Activities

  • Car or jeep hire is worthwhile, but the roads are winding and mountainous and the road signs are few so be prepared! It's about the same price to take a local driver for the day.
  • The Diamond Estate Botanical Gardens, waterfall and mineral baths are worth a visit.
  • If you can bear the smell, visit the Sulphur Springs.
  • Enjoy a boat trip to Soufriere or to Marigot Bay, where the original Dr Doolittle was filmed.
  • Whale-watching boat trips – over 20 species are regularly spotted throughout the year.
  • Enjoy Anse La Raye’s Friday night fish fry or ‘Bang between The Pitons’on Wednesdays.
  • Wander round Castries market (but check when the cruise ships come in as the downtown area can get congested).
  • Children's Choice: the National Trust runs a Kids Summer Safari in July and August (details on www.slunatrust.org).

    Festivals and Special Events
4-13 May Saint Lucia's International Jazz Festival
    June Fisherman's Feast
    July Carnival, centred around Castries.
    October Creole Heritage Month
