If you are thinking of Paraguay travel why not pick your Paraguay hotel from our extensive list of Paraguay hotels. Paraguay, right at the heart of South America, surrounded by Brazil, Argentina and Bolivia. The lush and fertile east and the barren, sparsely populated Chaco region to the west are two distinct areas, separated by the River Paraguay. The remote Chaco is home to unusual immigrant communities such as the Mennonites, who live along side the Amerindians, the original inhabitants of the region.
Paraguay's famous Jesuit missions were founded in the 17th century, the result of a determined effort by the Jesuit priests to convert the Guarani aborigines to Christianity. A visit to the restored ruins offers a fascinating glimpse into the past.
The colossal Itaipu is the world's largest hydroelectrical dam, an awe inspiring site supplying electricity to most of Southern Brazil, with the Iguassu Falls within easy reach. The falls link three international borders, Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina, and it's easy enough to cross over to see their splendour from all sides.
Paraguay can easily be combined with trips to Brazil or Argentina and is an under-exlored region just waiting to be discovered.
Asuncion
Today the city, originally founded in 1536, is a wide metropolis of tree lined avenues, parks, squares and historic buildings, with a fine location on the shores of the River Paraguay. The famous square, Plaza de los Heroes, commemorates those who died in the many wars endured by Paraguay and is lined by colourful market stalls selling fruit and traditional arts and crafts. You may see a military parade here, a vestage of the country's pride in its armed forces, or see a display of traditional folk dancing. Asuncion has many top class restaurants where you can eat for a fraction of the price of other Latin American capital cities, prices are extremely good value.
Climate and when to go
The weather is sub-tropical. Good times to visit would generally be from March to June and September to December; July and August are the winter months in Paraguay and can be cold at night.
