places on earth, and finishes at the Cape of Good Horn in the far south, one of the most dangerous places at sea. It is indeed a land of extremes.

Chile is famed for its national parks, the most famous being the Torres del Paine National Park in the southern part of Patagonia, which has been designated a
UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, where armadillos, the occasional puma, guanacos and more than 100 species of bird can be spotted amongst some of the most
dramatic scenery on earth. This is provided by the Torres, vast granite towers which overhang and dominate the area before falling away into a lavish valley
full of lakes, waterfalls, glaciers and icebergs. And then there is the Lake District itself – a majestically beautiful area where water and land merge seamlessly together.

Snow-capped volcanoes are reflected in the brilliant blue of the lakes of which there are twelve main ones, although dozens more dot the landscape. These are
often fed by rivers which provide some of the best fishing in the southern hemisphere.

For something a little less dramatic, head for the capital of Santiago. This is the gateway to the ski areas as well as the best beaches, both are about an hour’s drive away.
